How Great Leaders Get People to Believe in Something They Can’t Yet Imagine
“Leadership is the art of giving people a vision they didn’t know they needed—until they see it come to life.”
I’ve spent over two decades performing magic and mentalism for audiences around the world—from intimate boardrooms to national TV and Las Vegas stages. And I’ve learned this:
Before the illusion ever happens, the audience has to believe something extraordinary is possible.
That’s not just a performance principle.
It’s a leadership principle.
Because leadership, like magic, isn’t about tricking people. It’s about helping them see what they can’t yet see—and getting them to believe in the impossible, before it becomes real.
Let’s break down how great leaders do this.
1. They Set the Stage for Possibility
In magic, what you set up is just as important as the final reveal.
A great illusion doesn’t begin with the climax. It starts with a story, a moment of tension, and the invitation: “What if?”
Great leaders do the same thing.
Before you launch the new product…
Before the culture shift…
Before the change initiative…
You have to set the emotional stage. Paint the picture. Create the “what if.”
🎯 Ask:
“What would it feel like to be part of something no one’s done before?”
“What if our team could lead the entire industry in this?”
“What happens if we don’t make this leap?”
Possibility begins where clarity and curiosity meet.
2. They Bridge the Belief Gap
Most people don’t resist change because they’re lazy.
They resist because they can’t yet see themselves in the future you’re building.
Your job as a leader? Bridge that gap.
🪜 How?
Share before-and-after stories (even your own)
Break the vision into emotional, achievable steps
Remind them of their own past wins and untapped potential
Belief is contagious—but someone has to spark it first.
3. They Anchor the Vision in Emotion, Not Just Logic
I’ve watched thousands of faces shift from skepticism to sheer awe—and it rarely happens because I explained “how” something works.
It happens because I gave them a feeling.
Leadership works the same way.
People don’t follow ideas.
They follow emotionally charged ideas.
That means anchoring your vision in purpose, values, legacy—whatever gets hearts beating faster.
Instead of saying:
“We’re launching a new platform to increase efficiency.”
Say:
“We’re building something that will free up your time, your creativity, and your energy to do your best work.”
Emotion opens the door to belief.
4. They Model What They Want Others to Imagine
One of my rules as a performer is this: If I’m not amazed by what I’m doing, they won’t be either.
The same goes for leadership.
If you want people to believe in a bold future, they need to see what it looks like. Through you.
Let them see your energy.
Your passion.
Your willingness to take the first leap.
Imagination is magnetic—especially when it’s modeled with conviction.
5. They Create Shared Moments of “Proof”
Even the best magic trick only works if there’s a moment where the impossible becomes real—right in front of your eyes.
Leaders must create those moments too.
A prototype.
A test win.
A visible success story.
An early milestone reached.
These are your team’s “Aha!” moments—moments that whisper, “See? It’s real. It’s happening.”
Build those moments into your rollout, your meetings, your culture. And make sure people feel part of the reveal—not just spectators.
Final Thought: You’re Not Just Leading. You’re Casting a Spell.
At its core, leadership isn’t just about decisions or direction.
It’s about vision transfer.
It’s helping people hold a picture in their mind of something extraordinary—before it exists.
That’s what I do as a magician.
It’s what the best leaders do, too.
If you can spark imagination, anchor it in purpose, and lead with presence—you’ll get people to believe in more than your ideas.
You’ll get them to believe in themselves.
